Why does God desire us to be refined? Well for starters, can we consider ourselves good enough for His purposes? Most definitely not! However, the word refine denotes the making of something fine again. As to imply that we were fine but now we are not and so we need to be refined. This process is used in liquors, metals and other materials that may have impurities or feculence in it. The refining process is what is used to remove those impurities! We have to understand first that there is a purpose for refinement and second that being refined is a standard that He has created in us from the beginning. Welcome to a year of refinement.
